Peter Simpson Fungal Form
I first apprehended this work on a visit to Swindon Museum when I was studying at the local Swindon College. The work struck me and made a big impression in my mind and, I think, has been one of the works that has influenced all my making. I have also become well-acquainted with his works in the V&A collection. So when I was invited to respond to work from the Swindon collection, I knew which it would be immediately. I wanted to capture the qualities of Simpson’s work that most appeal; the wetness of the clay, the softness of porcelain in the kiln and the sharp, fine lines; the pleasure of making in pursuit of an idea.
I am delighted that Swindon Museum and Art gallery have since accepted the donation of the work I made after Simpson to their collection.
